How to read it
- Behind the truck the road is lit by the diesel price under it: teal is cheap, red is dear. Ahead of the truck it stays dark until it is driven.
- Stations appear as the truck passes them. Each card compares the station with the one before it, or says so plainly when it is the cheapest found so far.
- Drag the price strip in the live card to scrub. Space plays and pauses; the arrow keys step five miles (Shift for fifty).

Frequently asked questions
Where do the diesel prices come from?
From the HERE Fuel Prices API, licensed and resold by Placematic. The map uses a dated snapshot of posted retail diesel prices at stations along the route, and only prices in US dollars per gallon at US stations are counted.
Are these live fuel prices?
No. They are a snapshot taken on the date shown on the map. They are retail prices at the pump; carriers on fuel cards pay negotiated rates.
Why not just use the national average diesel price?
Because no truck pays it. What a trip costs depends on the prices along the lane the truck actually runs, and the spread between the cheapest and the dearest stations on one lane can be large, especially across state lines.
How is the fuel cost calculated?
The route is a HERE truck route for a five-axle combination at 80,000 lb, 13 ft 6 in, 53 ft. Fuel burn is assumed at 6.5 mpg loaded, and each stretch of road is costed at the posted diesel price of the nearest station, smoothed over five route points.
Which routes are covered?
Interstate 10 from El Paso, Texas to Ontario, California today. More interstate corridors are being added.
Can I build something like this into my own product?
Yes. Placematic provides fuel prices, truck routing, geocoding and map APIs used by ELD, TMS and logistics platforms. The free tier includes 10,000 requests a month.
